About the Author

My name is Amanda Tiffen.

I was born in Blenheim, New Zealand in October 1974 and I now I live in Christchurch, New Zealand.  This book is about my journey to better health and weight-loss.

Life is busy, I work full time in retail and manufacturing with my husband Robbie, and together we have two young boys, Charlie (born 2004) and Alex (born 2006).

I have battled with weight my entire adult life, trying different diets and exercise regimes to lose weight, but the weight never stayed off.

In 2014 (as I turned 40 years old), I weighed my heaviest weight of 80.5 kg (size 16, XL) with no sign of slowing down!

I had completely given up on ever being slim again. I had tried many weight loss programs all with good results but always temporary and my weight was back on the UP again.

In September 2014 I watched a documentary researched by the amazing Julianne Taylor, hosted by Nigel Latta called “Is sugar the new fat?”. I wondered whether sugar was my problem.

I began researching how much hidden sugar was in everyday foods and I was astonished at how much there was.  I eventually discovered that my weight problem was a direct link to sugar, not junk food but healthy and hidden sugars.  Once I reduced my total sugar consumption (natural, sweeteners and white refined), I reduced my weight.

With changes, I have managed to lose 20kg and quite easily.

I have helped many friends and family to make the change and they have also had astonishing results, in some cases 10-17kg losses.

I am constantly being approached by people asking about my weight loss so I decided to write a book about it.

“A Life Less Sugar, with recipes by Leigh Brown” is this book.

This book is about myself and the changes I have made to achieve both better health and weight reduction.

I am not a qualified nutritionist or dietitian.

The information in this book is not intended to replace the information from a nutritionist, dietitian or registered medical professional.

After writing this book I have frequently heard success stores with others reducing their sugars and feeling great.

Now when I go clothes shopping (instead of being over looked by staff and walking out a little depressed), I am asked by shop staff to “try on” clothes that are new to their store, so they can see what the new clothes look like on and that is the most amazing feeling ever!  I can now buy anything and I know it looks great and I feel great.

When photos are taken of me, I can see that camera’s really don’t lie, I look the same in the photos now as I do in the mirror.

Whoever said being slim doesn’t make you happy, was wrong.  I have always been a happy person, that hasn’t changed, but I do feel now that my life is complete.

This true story is about how I reduced my sugar intake and how that reduction resulted in a positive impact in my life.

Weight loss and health improvement both became a natural occurrence that happened during the process of reducing my sugar.

DO YOU REALLY EAT “LESS SUGAR?”

Do you eat fruit? Do you eat vegetables? Do you eat yoghurt? Do you eat cereal? Do you enjoy fruit smoothies? Do “juice”? Do you mix sauces with your meat? Do you eat low fat foods?

If you eat any of these items, you eat sugar and it’s highly likely you eat more sugar than you think you do!

Ultimately you make your own decisions, that’s the beauty of this, if you learn this process and adapt it into your everyday life you will do this forever. This won’t be a passing phase; this will be your new life.

Are you ready to make the change?

  5. Is this book for sale in Australia

    1. Hi, I am trying to find a company in Australia to take it on, at this stage no one has taken it but we have it for sale on our website and everyday I am sending to Australia, check it out under international, by all means when you are in your local book shop next, tell them about it, i think they should have it!

  6. Got your book yesterday. Still confused on reading the labels. Shall I always look at the right hand column first. Have been used to looking at the left hand one? Cheers and thanks

    1. Hi, the 100gram/100ml column is there so you can compare all food products together. Every food item has a 100ml/100gram column whereas every product has a different serving size (left hand column). I personally always look at the 100gram/100ml column so I can see which food product has the least amount of sugar. Hope that helps

  7. Hi Amanda
My mother and I are both struggling with our weight. I go too the gym, try and eat better, but never seem to be able to stick with it.
I came across your article on Facebook, let my mum know how you lost all that weight from cutting sugar, and so we are really keen on purchasing your books.
What is the name of the cookbook you have just released?

    Thanks

    1. No problem, A Life Less Sugar Recipes, cheers Amanda

  8. Hi Amanda,
Just wondering, do you have nutrition qualifications?
I have seen your book in stores and am concerned with a number of claims you have made. As a dietitian working with the public daily I am hoping you consulted with a range of health professionals before self publishing.

    1. Hi, I am proud to say I have no background in nutrition at all, everything I have written is about my successful journey. thanks for your message.

  9. Hi, just an update, Julianne Taylor the Nutritionist behind the Nigel Latta doco on sugar, the very person who did all the research sent me a message today endorsing my books and congratulating me on an amazing book which explains sugar in our diet so simply. So I am really proud to get this feedback from her. Have a great day!

  10. Hi Amanda, have just order your book “A Life Less Sugar Recipes”. I stopped using sugar back in July 2016 due to bad health. I have lost 7kgs and feel FABULOUS. I am so looking forward to using your book so I can continue eating healthy. Thank you so much for sharing your life story.

  11. Hi Amanda

8 years ago I was a slightly overweight 70 something woman but became pre diabetic. I followed almost the same procedure as you in being very selective with shopping and including stopping grazing on dates and never buying white sugar. My husband & I both lost about 8 kilos in four months. Diabetes is a thing of the past. No sugar in our house. You can exist without it but we do have the occasional ‘treats’. Now we are 2 healthy active 80 yr olds pplaying golf 3 times a week.

For a long time I have gazed at the obese and being a physiotherapist I would love someone to tell them of their dire future. Not only diabetes with danger of blindness and gangrene and short life expectancy but the inevitable hip and knee replacements. In my opinion it is the duty of all GP’s to make people aware of this. I am appalled that manufacturers are not gradually reducing sugar in products. This way people would not notice as they gradually become used to less sugar and manufacturers would make more money as they buy less sugar to put into goods!!!

Good luck with your book and future endeavours. Valerie Martin

    1. Thanks so much for your message Valerie, thats so great to hear your story and I totally agree with you, another issue I am facing is the “sugarfree” fad, its this the next “lowfat” fad? Where manufacturers pump our foods full of sweeteners and label them as sugar free? I only wish the food manufacturers would reduce the sugar in food and NOT replace it with anything. That would be an ideal world! Again thanks so much for your message xx Amanda

  12. Hi Amanda
Did you receive any support or assistance with your decision to go ‘sugar free’?
I about to start this process myself but am a bit overwhelmed!!!

    1. Hi, Not really but that’s mainly because I kept it all to myself as I was just trying something new, I didn’t really think reducing my sugar would do anything so I didn’t really tell anyone what I was doing. Also I was working things out as I went along, I didn’t have any guidance. By the time I was losing weight it was clear it was the sugar so at that point people became supportive because it was working. Join our support group on facebook there are a lot of people all going through the same thing and everyone is very supportive xx

  13. Hi Amanda
Just saw you on Seven Sharp – You are looking fantastic. I will be buying your book. I have put on a lot of weight since being diagnosed with cancer. I am totally useless with reading and understanding labels. Do you cover reading labels in your book? I have tried several times to not eat sugar but get terrible headaches – its like I need the sugar fix which once I have the headaches go. Catch 22.

    1. Wow, cancer is a hard one, you need to have a good weight to help fight but cancer but I also think sugar is bad for cancer so that’s a catch 22 aswell, Im sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Yes I do cover label reading in the book, in quite a basic form. Regarding the withdrawals, its about taking your time, one change at time, its not a race, if you find similar products to what you are eating now but with less sugar your body hopefully won’t notice your change, if you give sugar up all together and in one day, that’s when the withdrawals kick in and its nasty. You can do this!

      1. Thank you for your reply. I have been trying to stop all sugar in one day and the headaches feeling sick and no energy is really bad so just go back to the sugar habit.10kg’s is my goal to loose and I will still be in a healthy range. I’m off today to buy your book and start my journey.

  14. Hi Amanda,
I’ve just purchased your book – I’m so looking forward to receiving it.
I have made a lot of changes to my diet in the past four months and reducing sugar is something I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time. I am really looking forward to seeing some of the recipes and getting ideas for healthy meals.
As I see it, you are not just an author, you are someone that has been there, done that, you have walked the walk in size 16 and that speak volumes to me as I can relate to what you are saying – I am so looking forward to reading your story.

    1. Thanks for your message, yep i am just someone who found the key to weight loss and decided to share it with everyone as simply as I could, i hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to join our support group xx
